| Stud
farm breeding services |
 |
The
clinic offers a range of advice and services to studs and
brood mares farms in the practice area. Basic reproductive
advice on mares and the optimum time to serve mares on walk-out
farms and stallion farms is offered during the breeding season.
Advice on stallion fertility and management is also available
through experienced and skilled veterinarians. A 24 hour emergency service, available for reproductive and other types of urgent conditions, is maintained 365 days per a year.
|
| Neonatal
intensive care |
 |
The
clinic has invested in equipment and facilities that enables
it to provide a 24 hour neonatal service for sick foals. The
neonatal service is under the overall guidance of Dr Tammy
Howard, and is based on her experiences in visiting large
neonatal units in the USA. Foals are cared for by trained
nurses and their treatment and progress is monitored by state-of-the-art
diagnostic equipment and medical techniques.
|
| Chilled
semen services |
 |
A full range of services for the collection, processing and dispatch of chilled semen is available. Semen is collected
by an artificial vagina, using a phantom mare or one of the
clinic's mount mares. Processing is carried out in the semen
laboratory and handed to our experienced office staff, who
are experienced in ensuring that semen is dispatched in a
timely manner for its destination. The clinic is approved
by AQIS for semen export to the USA and NZ.

| Frozen
semen services
|
 |
The
clinic is fully equipped to freeze semen. We have a programmable
freezer and a floating freezer to allow flexibility in freezing
methods. We are happy to store frozen semen for clients if
they so desire. During the breeding season we inseminate client
mares with frozen semen as required. Semen from warmblood,
quarter horse, arab and standardbred stallions is regularly
used. A veterinarian lives at the clinic, which makes the
insemination process more efficient. A laparoscopic insemination
technique is offered for clients who wish to conserve precious
semen. Using this technique, a small amount of frozen / thawed
semen is deposited on the oviduct inside the uterine horn,
using an endoscope.

| Embryo
transfer |
 |
Embryo
transfer enables embryo donor mares to continue competition,
while the surrogate mare carries her pregnancy. This is accomplished
by removing the embryo from the uterus of the donor when she
is about 7 days pregnant. The embryo is then transferred to
the surrogate mare, whose cycle has been synchronized with
that of the donor. The Avenel Equine Clinic provides a full
range of embryo transfer services and has a herd of surrogate
mares available. Alternatively owners can opt to provide their
own surrogate mares. Embryo transfer is also a useful technique
for donor mares that have a history of loosing pregnancies. |

|
| Ambulatory
horse services |
 |
The
Avenel Equine Clinic has been servicing horse owners of the
Seymour / Avenel area for more than 20 years. We provide a
complete service, 24 hours a day for general horse medicine
emergencies. The clinic has an in-house blood analysis machine
and other diagnostic tools, which provide quick answers and
enhance our ability to provide the very best treatment for
your horse. If necessary the clinic has large, airy boxes
to maintain horses which require hospitalisation. The practice
services its clients in the area bounded by Nagambie, Euroa,
Yea, Broadford and Heathcote.
|
| Surgical
services |
 |
There
is a surgery and knock-down/recovery box at the clinic, for
surgical cases. We carry out minor general surgery, reproductive
surgery and foal surgery. For more complicated elective surgery
we are able to call on a specialist equine surgeon, who visits
the clinic as required.
